In seafaring towns around New England and the Maritime provinces, you sometimes see and hear the motto "holdfast." In nautical terms, a holdfast is the root structure that holds aquatic plants to the sea floor. But it is also the ancient motto for the Scottish clan MacLeod, some of whom who survived the clans' uprising of the 18th century, and later emigrated to the US and Canada through the Maritimes. Holdfast means everything you can imagine to an immigrant: courage, strength, stubbornness, and also - hope. Stitch your own message of "holdfast" in this design inspired by Nova Scotia's ties to Scotland and the sea.
